About Generic / ANSI SQL SQL formatting
ANSI SQL is the right starting point when a query should remain portable across database engines. The standard covers SELECT, JOIN, common table expressions, grouping, CASE expressions, window functions, and many DDL forms, but each vendor adds its own extensions. A generic formatter therefore needs to be conservative: it should improve the structure of standard SQL while avoiding assumptions about a proprietary function, identifier convention, or pagination clause.
This ANSI SQL formatter uses a neutral layout for common relational constructs. CTEs are visibly nested, joins and ON predicates are separated, aggregate clauses follow the query they qualify, and window definitions remain readable across line lengths. It preserves quoted literals, aliases, comments, and vendor-neutral expressions so the output can be adapted later for PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, DuckDB, or another compatible engine.
The editor starts with a portable regional-sales query containing multiple CTEs, joins, a ranking window, and a CASE expression. Use it when preparing documentation, migration drafts, cross-database tests, or SQL generated by an application. Format the query, inspect the diff, and then choose a vendor-specific landing page if the finished SQL needs features such as STRUCT, QUALIFY, FLATTEN, or T-SQL APPLY.
That separation helps teams discuss portability independently from formatting preference.
A neutral result is most valuable when several teams consume the same query or when a migration is still choosing its target engine. The dedicated ANSI page provides a clean baseline, while the dialect pages explain the vendor-specific constructs to introduce once portability is no longer the priority.
Because the standard syntax is shared by many systems, the formatter avoids adding a false claim of vendor-specific validation. Use the output as a portable baseline, then select the matching dialect page when the query adopts an engine extension.
What's different about ANSI SQL formatting? ANSI formatting uses a neutral layout for portable CTEs, joins, grouping, and window expressions without assuming vendor extensions. Example: WITH recent AS (SELECT * FROM orders) SELECT * FROM recent;
ANSI SQL formatting highlights
- Standard ANSI SQL:1999/2011 compliant formatting
- Common Table Expressions (WITH clauses)
- Standard JOINs (INNER, LEFT, RIGHT, FULL OUTER)
- Window functions and aggregate subqueries
Universal SQL syntax without vendor-specific proprietary extensions. The editor above is already configured for Generic / ANSI SQL; format the included sample or replace it with a query from your own project.
